Kansas is served by numerous transportation options. The Sunflower State is crossed by two Interstate
highways: I-70, crossing east/west, and I-35, crossing north/south, and their respective spurs and
bypasses. An important U.S. highway, U.S. route 69, travels north to south from Minnesota to Texas and
passes through eastern Kansas.
Air travel in Kansas is serviced primarily by the Kansas
City International Airport (MCI) in Kansas City, Missouri, not far from the state line. Additional
airports found in the Sunflower State include the Wichita
Mid-Continent Airport (ICT), which serves over 1.4 million passengers annually; the Forbes Field Airport (FOE); and the Salina
Municipal Airport (SLN).
Several commuter options exist within the Sunflower State. The Kansas City Area Transportation Authority is an interstate agency of Missouri and
Kansas providing public transportation to an average of 50,000 passengers per day over 70 bus routes;
plans are in place to implement a future light rail system. Wichita Transit offers the city of Wichita a fleet of 51 busses on 18 fixed
routes. The city of Lawrence provides the Lawrence
Transit System, which operates 8 fixed routes on the "T" bus system.
Amtrak serves Kansas with the Southwest Chief, connecting Chicago to Los Angeles. Amtrak stations exist in
Lawrence, Topeka, Newton, Hutchinson, Dodge City, and Garden City.
