Kansas provides many fine opportunities for education. For school-aged children, the Sunflower State
boasts over 1,400 schools in over 300 public school districts, and over 200 private schools.
Kansas prides itself on its many public and private universities and colleges. The University of Kansas (KU) in Lawrence offers over 170 fields of study in 14
schools, with over 2,100 faculty members. Over 29,000 students attend KU. At Kansas State University (K-State) in Manhattan, over 23,000 students are enrolled;
over 250 undergraduate and over 100 graduate majors and programs are available. The Kansas State
University Grain Science and Industry program is the only program of its kind in the U.S. Other
public universities include Wichita State
University, in Wichita, with over 14,000 enrolled; Emporia State University in Emporia, with over 6,000 enrolled; Fort Hays State University in Hays, with over 9,000 students; and Pittsburg State University in Pittsburg, with over 6,800 enrolled.
The Sunflower State is also home to many fine private educational institutions. Haskell Indian Nations University in Lawrence serves American Indian and Alaska
Native peoples and provides a multicultural education, enrolling over 1,000 students per semester.
Kansas offers many religious-based private universities, such as the Catholic university, Newman University in Wichita and the MidAmerican
Nazarene University in Olathe, among many others.
Kansas is well served by many community colleges. Some of these include Dodge City Community College & Area Technical Center; Independence Community College in Independence; Kansas City Kansas Community College; Colby
Community College in Colby; and numerous others.
