Biography
Dick Martin became president of Physio-Control Corporation in 1991 when
the company was part of Eli Lilly and Company's Medical Devices and Diagnostics Division.
He successfully instituted company-wide quality improvement programs, rebuilt the
management team and took the company public.
Previously, Martin was the vice president for cardiovascular business
development at Sulzermedica, Inc. Also, he held several senior positions in
engineering, marketing and sales with Intermedics, Inc. and was named president and COO of
that company in 1985.
Martin has a Ph.D. in electrical engineering from Duke University and
taught at Christian Brothers College and the University of Tennessee before joining the
corporate world. Dr. Martin has served on the board and as chairman of the Northwest
affiliate of the American Heart Association. He was also on the boards and chairman of
the Medical Device Manufacturers Association and the Washington Council of AeA, and
served as AeA’s national chairman in 2001. Dick Martin is now retired.

Medtronic Physio-Control
Corporation pioneered portable external defibrillation technology 30
years ago. Today the company's LIFEPAK monitor/defibrillators are used by field emergency
medical personnel and staff at eight out of 10 US hospitals, and its new, very simple
automated external defibrillators (AEDs) are used by first responders such as police and
security officers.
